Black History Month

Black History Month, Africa

This month we are celebrating Black History with graphics from Africa. We are featuring civilizations with sculpture, masks, mudcloth and photos of houses and people. We can use our imaginations to travel to Africa and look at a heritage of people living off the land, farming and painting with mud on cloth. We have some great mud here and any of you can take some muslin and cut a rectangle and draw with the mud. Dip the picture in beet or onion juice or tea and wash out the mud.

Absence

To MVCLC: My Apologies for being ill so long, Suzanne, the editor has fallen to the side to try to boost her immune system and stop the flu rounds. This whole thing with losing my hearing with double infection and getting the number three whatever is going around five times has left me short tempered and dizzy. Removed myself from society for a while until my attitude readjusts. And, mother from the black lagoon returns as Mrs. Nice. My kids love writing club, math club and seeing all their friends. The hearing is back, you just can't bang the drum yet. Contact Carol for information on the co-operative. Held once a week. Mothers and Dads teach a class and the children enjoy learning with friends. Contact Carol for information.

4-H

Second and fourth Tuesday at 10:00. This month we are meeting at Lisa's. The other mothers will step up to the plate while Lisa returns to school. Expect to keep on getting our minds stimulated and our hands on stuff. Speaking of stuff, we found spores in Kathy's mixture. We looked at interesting fungus and mycology with magnifying glass and microscopes, made slides of beef decomposing and ate delicious Amish bread with fermented yeast. The movie was really good. Although, the beasties were in our dreams. Thanks for bringing so much excellant fungus to look at. We had a great science adventure.

Discussed making a bird feeder out of wood.

The first meeting of 4-H will be February 13th. The day before Valentine's Day. Come prepared to make cards and exchange cards. We'll have paper, glue, scissors and if you have a stamp or a sponge bring it. We will also plan to have music like Romeo and Juliet (or bring your own). Then, you dance or play some games. Hearts, anyone? Each parent please bring a drink or something to share in the usual bad for food groups of cookie, cake or muffin. We'll have candy kiss writing and some other stuff to do. The Valentine Social will be just in time for Valentine's Day.

On the fourth Tuesday, we have a Walk in the Woods planned. Bring your knowledge of trail blazing and we could walk in Huntley Meadows woods looking for deer and hidden spring flowers. E-mail Suzanne or Lisa for more information. 4-H has lots of information about trees and habitat. If the teens want to prepare a talk about nature, please do. Posters are welcome.

Voice and Orchestra

Orf orchestra with Lynnell Lewis is ongoing at Mt. Vernon Unitarian Church on Thursday. Voice and orchestra. Grouped by age. E-Mail Lynnell for information.

Suzuki violin

The Violin Studio with teacher Patrica Kim. Suzuki method. It's good, we are pleased with the seven months our child has been playing. Never fear they only play loud until they get intonation. Actually, we have filmed our child with the Nanday Conure dancing on her head while she plays the violin. Don't ask to see the film unless you have severe insomnia. Several of our friends asked to see Bam Bam dance on Kathy's head while she plays minuets.

Bagels and Books

Bagels and Books Monday, Feb.5 is Bring a Friend Book discussion with the librarian at Sherwood Library. 10:00. The book this month is the Red Scarf Girl This book has stimulated a lot of discussion. Good view of life in China . This group brings older teens to the library. The brothers and sisters have a great time in the library. We read together. Parents can talk together. The librarian picks the books and this program is wonderful.

Art

Pet portraits on 4x6¨ paper or canvas board. We discussed miniatures and the Washington Post had an article on pet portraits we read aloud. At Michael's we found some inexpensive paints and we looked at some miniatures of children with their pets that an Amish artist had painted. Encourage the children to paint slow since the Baron is going to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner and everyone at the palace wants a picture of their pet. Don't forget to shop around the frame shops for the best frame. We also discussed auctions of art, and this could be an added activity. Paper fans with numbers could be distributed. Bidders could raise their fan, and the winner could take home a pet portrait.

Field Trip

George Washington's Birthday is a free day for those of you who want to brave the crowd and smell the saltpeter when the old Guard shoots at the officials on the lawn. My kids thought it was real. Looks like the 19th is the day to go look at the house and the grounds and walk until we crawl in history. We have since learned more about colonial days, but we especially like to have lunch at the Inn. They have peanut soup. There is parking early and late. Buses from some locations to add to the thrill. Lots of costumes and fun. Check out the plantation buildings for how people lived and worked at Mount Vernon.
