Hey Everybody!
On Monday, April 10, Lisa Lamarra, Jennifer Eubanks and Nathan Schwartz
are going to attend the "egg training". The following day is our next
meeting and we decided to build our own incubators out of Styrofoam
coolers. The Lamarras have researched and supplied the following list
of
supplies and instructions.

Styrofoam ice chest (12"-16" x 20"-24" x 12"-15")
Heating cable
Micro-switch assembly (thermostat)
1/4" welded wire-hardware cloth (24" x 36")
9" x 14" cake tin
Thermometer
Masking Tape
We will need 6 of everything so that each family can participate. That
means each family will get 2 eggs.
The instructions are at
http://fineartforum.org/dept/poultry/avianemb.htm#construct .
Jennifer and I discussed the possibility of each family buying 6 of one
item, so that it would be easier to assemble all of the supplies. we
can
argue about the expense when we find out what it costs. If it turns
out
that a thermometer is $20.00, and the thermostat is $20.00, we can each
order a "mini-dome incubator" from Murray McMurray Hatchery at
1-800-456-3280, or http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com for $16.80 plus
shipping. I think it would be fun to make the incubators, but I'm not
willing to spend more than $20.00 on this project. Please give me your
opinions. If it turns out that we order rather than assemble our
incubators, we'll need ideas for a fun activity for next time. Please
give me your opinions on that, too.
Nathan gave me the list of ideas for activities back with some things
he
added:
fishing
kayaking
books
survival skills
science
Indian reservation
technology science (like electronics)
space (Nathan, try a web search for NASAQUEST.com, there are some
great
interactive activities with NASA. L.)
If there are other ideas, let's hear them. Part of gaining our charter
is to make a 1 year long range plan of activities. Once we have the
ideas, all that is left is to decide when. That's all for now.
Lisa
